Awareness

There is an enormous lack of understanding in the community in relation to the true cause and nature of eating disorders. The negative stigma brought about by this lack of understanding provides a barrier to the recovery of sufferers by contributing to the reluctance of some sufferers to seek help and treatment and to the hardship faced by both sufferers and carers. Eating disorders are a serious, life-threatening mental illness. They are not a lifestyle choice and are about feelings, not food.

The Butterfly Foundation believes that the respect, compassion and understanding that sufferers of eating disorders deserve will only be achieved through awareness and education campaigns and programs in schools, the health service sector and the wider community.

Butterfly work tirelously to address this through vigorous campaigns with posters, postcards, the media and numerous events.

Avant Postcard Campaign
Butterfly have distributed over 60,000 free avant postcards reaching out to sufferers and friends of sufferers encouraging a more empathetic and compassioante response from the community and encouraging sufferers to seek help and treatment.

The Butterfly Foundation was proud to celebrate International No Diet Day - a day celebrated around the world each year on May 6th.

'It's not about food, it's about feelings' campaign

"Eating disorders are about anxiety, loneliness and depression. The journey to recovery is long and winding. Sufferers need your support."

'Festive Season' campaign

"The Festive season is a celebration of food, friends, family and community and for many it is a time of giving and receiving, reflection, new years resolutions, love, joy and happiness. For sufferers of eating disorders this time is a major challenge and is surrounded by intense feelings of anxiety, fear, isolation and desperation. Eating disorders are not just about food they are about feelings - low self worth stands in the way of love, joy and happiness. Sufferers need your support... give them a hug today, tell them you love them, and urge them to seek professional treatment... the journey is best shared."

National Body Image & Eating Disorders Awareness Week

National Body Image & Eating Disorders Awareness week runs for the first week of September each year. Since 2003, under the auspice of VEDOC (Victorian Eating Disorder Organising Committee), The Butterfly Foundation, The Centre for Excellence in Eating Disorders (CEED) and The Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria (EDFV) have jointly launched this week and coordinate and promote various events and activities around Australia.

As part of Awareness week, VEDOC produce and distribute information packs to schools, universities, medical and community centres, hospitals and corporations.

We strongly encourage community involvement in this important week, not only through attending events and participating in activities, but also being part of the creation and organisation of events and activities. If you are interested in hosting your own event, contributing ideas or helping out please contact us at info@thebutterflyfoundation.org.au.
